Catastrophic Failures

USS Thresher SSN-593

Yesterday I was asked why I had joined the Navy, and specifically why I volunteered for the Submarine Force. It’s not all that complicated of an answer. I love the sea. I love my country. I love Naval vessels. And a year or so before I joined the Navy, I had read THE book that defines US Submarines service in WWII. Far from scaring me, the promise of joining the best of the best enthralled me and motivated me.

Then came the moment in SUBSCOL when they really ask you if you want to do this. Are you sure?  Because it is very, very, very dangerous.

The tell you the story of the USS Thresher…

What are we to make of the FBI raid on the offices of Trumps lawyer? Is it the “smoking gun” that will lead to impeachment of the President?  Or is it possible that it’s not even connected to the President?

Facebook CEO Mark Zukerburg testifies today in front of Congress. For all the hoopla and brouhaha, is anything likely to change? and will any of those changes be designed to enhance liberty or to restrict it? My Universe In a Nutshell

If I were to pick the books which have most influenced my life, there would be three of them:

Cosmos – Carl Sagan
A Brief History of Time – Stephen Hawking
Genesis and the Big Bang – Gerald Schroeder

One stands above the others, Hawking’s book – A Brief history of Time – came out at a time when I was drifting pretty aimlessly. The combination of the three books made a huge impact, but it was Hawking’s that… well… made it into a unified theory.

There is a great deal of pride that I feel as Ben discovers these cosmic truths on his own. Read the rest of this entry

Daylight Savings Time

The change to Daylight Savings Time is just hours away. It doesn’t bother me, then again, I am not tied to a strict schedule. But there are reasons that I prefer it.

The President pardoned the submarine sailor who took unauthorized photos of his boat. The reason is fuzzy to me, but it seems to be that Hillary Clinton did it too, so why punish this sailor for doing “the same thing?” Well… for starters, it wasn’t the “same thing.” For seconds, a Nuclear Machinist Mate First Class Petty Officer is a tad bit more important to the National Security than the Secretary of State… yes, I said that. Secretary of State is a “non-job.”

The Seattle Seahawks released Richard Sherman and now he has signed with the 49ers. People up here aren’t sure what to think about that. The Angels new $uper$tar isn’t doing very well…

The Military Parade is a “Dog and Pony Show.” If the President really wants to say “Thank You” to the troops, there are some better ways to do it…
