Lava Porn

It’s Friday… here’s some Lava Porn…

So MID has stepped in to stop the sale of OID water to San Francisco. There are two things here to consider. First, this isn’t some white knight riding in to do what’s best for the Valley – this is about protecting their own potential of selling water to San Francisco. Secondly, this isn’t even the “big” sale to Fresno which was the subject of last night’s meeting. MID’s stopping the SF sales is nothing more than a negotiating ploy, not an actual stopping of the sale. Stay on guard, my friends!

I just cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to the Socialist state of the Union Speech next week…

Have you not found this to be true? “Every problem has a gift for you in its hands.” -Bach.

I’ve said this for years when it comes to Public Sector pensions – if the job is really and honestly about “service,” then link the pensions to those of the Military.

With all due respect, the job of a Firefighter or Police Officer is nowhere near as dangerous as that of a Soldier or Marine or Sailor or Airman. Certainly not on as constant a basis. And the pay and benefits are far better. We are constantly told that Police and Firemen put themselves in harms way for us, and that they are there to serve. To the degree that they do so, it is true. If my house is being robbed or burning, yes, I am going to call for help and I expect that they will be there.

But when my Nation needs service, who do we call?

Does the day to day servce of a Police Officer or Firefghter really compare to a WestPac? A 4th or 5th tour in Afghanistan? Driving a Humvee through an IED infested neighborhood on a daily basis? So when it comes to retirement, if the Public Service jobs are really all about service, make them identical to the Military Pensions, including the lack of protection from Governments whims of reducing them.

I think that we all know that will never happen, because military people don’t have (or want) a Union – they truly are about service. Which is why it is infuriating that Military Pensions can be reduced, while Public Service pensions are held inviolate. Something is out of whack with our priorities and our politics when that can happen.

(Full Disclosure: I am not a military retiree, I receive no pension from the military. Nor am I now or ever have been a Public Service Union member.)

Alright… one more…
