Day 309 of the Year Twenty & 13

On this day…

In 1138 Lý Anh Tông is enthroned as Emperor in Vietnam. At the age of two. He rules for thirty-seven years. If you’re over 39 and have never ruled a country, he accomplished more than you did…

In 1605 Guy Fawkes is arrested in the Gunpowder plot. He is “the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions.”

In 1872 Susan B. Anthony votes. As it turns out, this is a crime for which she is fined $100.

In 1925 Super Spy Sidney Reilly is executed by the Soviet Union. He is listed by Ian Fleming as one of the inspirations for James Bond.

In 1995 a man attempts to assassinate the Canadian Prime Minister. The attack is stopped by his wife, who cleverly foils the attacker by… locking the front door.

In 2006 Saddam Hussein is sentenced to death for being an irritant to humanity.

In 2009 Major Nidal Hasan kills 13 Soldiers at Ft. Hood in Texas in what will be labeled “workplace violence”

Born this day: Will Durant (1885); Natalie Schaefer (1900); Roy Rogers (1911); Vivien Leigh (1913); Art Garfunkel (1941); Sam Shepherd (1943)
