In 42bce, Octavian and Mark Anthony defeat Brutus at the 2nd Battle of Phillipi. Brutus commits suicide after the battle.

In 1642 the Battle of Edgehill is the opening fight in the English Civil War. Nobody is really clear who won the battle.

In 1707 the First British Parliament meets.

In 1861 President Lincoln suspends the writ of habeas corpus in the United States for all military related cases.

In 1911 an aeroplane in used in combat for the first time in a war between Turkey and Italy fought in Libya. Oddly enough, Italy wins the war.

In 1929 the Stock Market panic begins.

In 1944 the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle in history, begins. “I know this book, Halsey acted stupidly.”

In 1956 The United Nations General Assembly convenes for the first time

In 1956 thousands of Hungarians gather to protest the Soviet occupation. They will be crushed in a few weeks by a Soviet invasion.

In 1972 Operation Linebacker ends after five months of heavy bombing of North Vietnam. Its effects force the North to the negotiation table.

In 1973 President Nixon agrees to turn over the subpoenaed tapes of Oval Office conversations.

In 1983 241 US Marines are killed when a truck bomb exploded outside their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.
